A recent report by Washington Consumers' Checkbook and checkbook.org finds that home warranties are rarely worth the cost. "When Checkbook examined 14 plans from six companies, we found that providers have many ways to reject claims or limit the amount they’ll pay," reports The Washington Post. "Worst of all, even if a problem is covered, you don’t get to decide who repairs it."

Consumers in the market for a home warranty should consider the following factors:

  • Warranty Fees
  • Fine Print Exclusions
  • Coverage
  • Quality of Repairs
