Wireless EV Charging is on the Horizon

In what Porsche says is an industry first, its 2026 Cayenne is joining the automaker’s electric SUV lineup with an optional inductive charging system that can be purchased with the vehicle.

The all-electric 2026 Porsche Cayenne is ushering in a new wave of electric-vehicle charging as the first Porsche model that can optionally support wireless charging.

According to the automaker, it is the “first car manufacturer to bring an 11-[killowatt] charging system with a one-box base plate for battery-electric vehicles to market maturity.” The inductive charging system is a floor plate that won't require a wallbox or control unit.

Porsche explained how inductive charging works. The floor plate will contain a transmitter coil made of copper and ferrites that will generate a magnetic field when alternating current flows through the coil. That magnetic field transfers the energy needed to charge the battery in the vehicle.

The floor plate uses ultrawideband technology to determine the vehicle’s position above it and informs the driver when the optimal parking position is reached. The charging process begins once the parking brake is activated. The plate also has a motion detector and foreign-object detection, so if something gets between the floor plate and the vehicle it will stop charging, the automaker said.

Porsche Wireless Charging floor plates can be installed in garages, carports or open-air parking spaces and be connected to the mains.

The Cayenne Electric, whose world premiere Porsche celebrated in November, is in production alongside its combustion engine and hybrid versions. All of Porsche’s SUVs now have fully electric options.
