Dozens of complaints of some Hondas’ automatic emergency braking systems engaging needlessly have led to a federal investigation of the issue.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration opened the probe after receiving nearly 50 complaints of the problem in 2019 to 2022 Insights and Passports. There have also been field reports of the issue.

Complainants told the agency that their vehicles’ AEB systems engaged without warning at times when nothing obstructed their paths, leading to fast deceleration, which it points out can result in accidents.

The preliminary investigation seeks to learn the scope and severity of the problem. No recall had been issued.
