General Motors recalled more than 90,000 Cadillacs and Camaros over a transmission issue that can lead to front wheel lockup.

The recall affects the 2020 and 2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, the 2019 and 2020 Cadillac CT6 and the 2020 to 2022 Camaro with 10-speed transmission. GM estimates that just 1% of the vehicle population has the defect.

In affected vehicles, a transmission control valve experiences excessive wear, leading to pressure loss that can cause “harsh” shifting, GM said in a recall notice. It indicated that in rare cases, wheels can temporarily lock up, an obvious crash risk.

The automaker said one accident had been reported that may have been related to the issue.

GM dealers will install transmission control module monitoring software to detect excess wear about 10,000 miles before a wheel lockup is possible and limit the transmission to fifth gear once such wear is noted in order to prevent a lockup, the recall notice says. The vehicle would also display a service light indicating the issue.

The automaker is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on April 21.
