As hybrid vehicles have risen in popularity this year along with gas prices, a handful of models rise to the top when it comes to fuel efficiency, a helpful piece of information for their dealers.

A new Cox Automotive report shows 22% of U.S. new-vehicle shoppers in the first half of the year considered hybrid models, a record high.

In California, a leader in low-emissions vehicle sales, actual hybrid deliveries in the same period exactly echoed the intent expressed in the Cox survey: 22% and a new state record for the powertrain, according to Experian data reported by the California New Car Dealers Association.

Automakers are paying attention, and multiple brands have moved to increase their hybrid production capacities.

Meanwhile, a ranking Consumer Reports released this week lists eight hybrids, all by  Japanese and South Korean brands, that get at least 40 mpg overall. All but one are 2026 model years:

• Toyota Prius
• Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
• Toyota Corolla Hybrid
• Toyota Camry
• Kia Niro
• Honda Civic Hybrid
• Toyota Crown  - the only 2025 on the list
• Honda Accord Hybrid
