Kia Closes Out Summer With a Bang

Its U.S. subsidiary broke multiple records in August, in part due to a surge of demand for hybrids models.

Kia said its August sales in the U.S. set a couple of brand records, in part from a dramatic jump in hybrid model demand.

The South Korean automaker broke its all-time monthly sales record with a 1% year-over-year increase to nearly 83,800 units sold in the U.S.

That result also put it at record-high deliveries for the year through August at 590,377 total and a little more than 543,000 units in retail sales, both up 3% year-over-year, the subsidiary said.

Kia reported that its hybrid model sales skyrocketed by 99% year-over-year and its overall electrified deliveries by 36%, also record highs for the month of August.

"The broad appeal of our products and the breadth of our powertrain offerings directly contributed to the high demand for our models and Kia's record-breaking sales performance," said Vice President, Sales Operations Eric Watson.

Hybrid vehicle demand has surged this year amid high gas prices resulting from the war in the Middle East, along with the end of federal tax credits for pure electric vehicles.

Kia’s freshened Niro SUV for the 2027 model year will be available only as a hybrid, the company said.

As part of the month’s sales surge, Kia’s Carnival, K4, K5, Seltos, Sportage and Telluride hit sales records for the month of August, according to the company.
