Electric vehicles as a segment tend to outlast gas-powered models at higher mileages, according to recent research.

The study, conducted in the United Kingdom for the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, found that upon reaching 60,000 miles, EV failure rates plateau at about 16% as both gas- and diesel-powered vehicles’ failure rates keep rising.

The firm that carried out the research is NewAutomotive, whose mission is to help facilitate EV adoption in the UK.

Several categories of hybrids also showed lower failure rates according to the study, which was based on analysis of more than 47 million instances of the annual UK test of vehicle safety, road-worthiness and emissions, known as the MOT.

It found that in the 90,000- to 120,000-mile range, EVs are about a quarter less likely to fail the MOT than gas-powered vehicles of the same age and mileage. Beyond 120,000 miles, 16% of EVs fail versus about 24% of gas-powered.

Though EVs are known to be hard on tires due to their heavier weights, the research found no basis for the idea that they have more suspension problems.

“What this data shows is that mileage alone should not put consumers off. A well-maintained, higher-mileage electric car can be an extremely durable used vehicle,” said the association’s chief executive, Toby Poston.

 “That matters because the used market is where the transition to electric becomes accessible to millions more motorists. Giving buyers confidence in these cars will be critical to creating a healthy and affordable second-hand EV market.”

The research didn’t include battery health analysis, which the study emphasized should be evaluated separately on the used market.

In the U.S., used EV sales rose 26% month-over-month in August, a 15% year-over-year gain as off-lease returns grew inventory, Cox Automotive reported. Demand was up despite used EV values being well above those seen a year earlier. The data put the average listing price at $37,441, up 8% year-over-year.

Back in Britain, more older EVs continue to be in operation compared to their gas-powered counterparts: 95% of those aged 15 returned for the MOT test compared to 88% of gas-powered cars that age, according to the study.

The results are all the more remarkable given the fact that EVs tend to be driven significantly more miles than gas vehicles, the research found.

“High mileage isn’t a proxy for poor condition in the way buyers have traditionally assumed,” said New AutoMotive Chief Executive Ben Nelmes. “The data suggests the mechanical simplicity of an electric drivetrain starts to become increasingly valuable."
