Hyundai, Kia Recall Vehicles Over Fire Risk

The Kia Forte is among multiple models between the two brands included in the recall across multiple older model years.

Hyundai and Kia have recalled about 3.4 million vehicles combined due to fire risk and are telling owners to park them outside and away from buildings.

The recall follows one by the South Korean automakers just last month but involves a different issue.

Hyundai is the parent company of Kia.

Fire can break out either when one of the recalled vehicles is turned off and parked or on and in motion, a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website says.

A problem with the vehicles’ antilock brake system module is the focus of the recall. The module could leak brake fluid internally, leading to an electrical short followed by an engine-compartment fire, the NHTSA says.

The automakers have indicated there have been 25 vehicle fires in the U.S. between their brands, plus nearly 30 incidents of smoke, burning or melting, according to the federal agency. Neither has reported injuries or crashes related to the problem.

Hyundai vehicles recalled are the Accent, Azera, Elantra, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Sante Fe, Sonata HEV, Tucson, Veloster and Veracruz across multiple model years ranging from 2011 to 2015.

Kia’s are the Cadenza, Forte, Optima, Rio, Rondo, Sorento, Soul and Sportage of multiple model years, from 2011 to 2017.
