Stellantis, owner of the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands, said its entire lineup is compatible with use of hydrotreated vegetable oil diesel fuel, a clean-burning alternative.

The fuel, known as HVO diesel for short, is made from renewable raw materials, such as vegetable oils, including waste cooking oils, while traditional diesel is petroleum-based. It’s produced through a hydrogenation process that makes it sulfur-free and with much lower levels of pollutants, Stellantis said.

The Netherlands-based automaker, formed by the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA Group, said that all of its cars and light-duty commercial vehicles will run on HVO.

“By broadening the adoption of green Diesel, Stellantis reinforces its commitment to protecting the environment and offering its customers sustainable choices that meet their needs,” Stellantis said in a press release announcing its vehicles’ HVO compatibility.

Both HVO and biodiesel are made from vegetable oils, but the production processes and chemical profiles are different. Stellantis didn’t address whether its vehicles can run on biodiesel.
