Toyota is partnering with Exxon Mobil to test fuel blends in its older and new models that it says could drastically cut harmful emissions.

The low-carbon fuels are compatible with current fueling infrastructure and with its lineup of gas-powered engines, the Japanese automaker said in a statement.

Toyota said the “innovative” fuels could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles by up to 75% compared to conventional fuels.

Toyota, which has lagged other major carmakers in transitioning to electric vehicles, is also pivoting to a more EV-heavy lineup with the recent appointment of CEO Koji Sato, who said he plans to accelerate the transition by adding 10 EV models by 2026.

Sato replaced the grandson of Toyota’s founder on April 1. Akio Toyoda had said he represented a “silent majority” of people who believe EVs shouldn’t be carmakers’ “single option.”
