The shades that dominate the U.S. car market don’t call attention to themselves, though grayscale may have plateaued after a 30-year upswing, research shows.

White surpasses all other car shades in the U.S. at 26% share based on the latest research.

Americans, despite holding an independent streak as a group, tend to run with the crowd when it comes to vehicle colors, and the crowd runs grayscale.
In research of more than 22 million used cars, search engine and research website iSeeCars.com found continued prominence of white, black, gray and silver for car body paint.
The four hues combined make up more than 80% of the U.S. market, and neutrality of vehicle colors has steadily gained over the past 30 years from 47% in 1996, the company said.
Still, some color shows through, especially in the sports car segment, and grayscale color growth seems to have flattened since the 2020 model year, iSeeCars said.
Pickups have leaned harder into grayscale than other segments, moving from 43% of the segment in 1996 to about 84% for the 2025 model year, the researchers found.
Though even sports cars are dominated by grayscale, nearly 16% are blue and about 11% red.
“Does the recent grayscale plateau signal the beginning of a return to more expressive colors across all segments?” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “That will depend on the paint choices automakers offer and the car colors consumers demand in the years ahead.”
