U.S. electric-vehicle market leader Tesla produced its first pickup, two years behind schedule.

The domestic EV market leader said in 2021, two years after it announced the coming model, that supply chain slowdowns would slow production on the truck, along with other Tesla vehicles.

The electric truck has been a big seller for EV startups and legacy automakers alike. Ford’s F-150 Lightning powered its 26% surge in second-quarter truck sales. The others look like conventional trucks, while the Cybertruck, with its stainless-steel body – Tesla calls it an exoskeleton – has a futuristic look like a vehicle out of 1960s cartoon “The Jetsons.”

“Better utility than a truck with more performance than a sports car,” Tesla says on its website.

The EV maker says the truck’s exterior is “nearly impenetrable,” with “Tesla armor glass,” as though riders will require such protection for James Bond-style missions.
