Tesla Tops American-Made List

As automakers have pulled back on EV production in the U.S., the number of vehicles on Cars.com’s American-Made Index has declined, though hybrids remain popular.

With America’s 250th anniversary on the horizon, cars aren't necessarily becoming more American-made.

Cars.com released its 21st annual American-Made Index featuring 86 vehicles it characterizes as contributing to the U.S. economy. Despite U.S. tariffs on vehicles and vehicle parts imports intended to encourage domestic manufacturing, the ranking has 13 fewer models than last year.

The car-shopping marketplace evaluated over 350 vehicles for their economic contributions through manufacturing, parts sourcing and employment.

Part of the decline is attributed to the overall share of electric vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, dropping year-over-year from 30% to 24%, which Cars.com linked to last fall's end of the federal EV tax credit. However, U.S. consumer preference for hybrids is seen in the index after its share rose this year.

Tesla snagged the top two spots for “most American-made” with its models 3 and Y, respectively, but Honda had the most models in the top 10 with its Ridgeline, Odyssey, Accord, Passport and Acura MDX.

Toyota, however, had the most vehicles on the overall list at 14 when including the automaker’s luxury brand Lexus, which secured a top 10 spot with the TX 350.

For the second year in a row, the top 10 vehicles tied for the highest average domestic parts content percentage at 70%, and several vehicles rose in rank in part because of their domestic parts content percentage.
